I've been here many times to count and it is our favorite omakase sushi restaurant in Toronto. If the price fits your budget, I recommend seating at the bar.I think Hiro has the best fish selection in the city. The chef decided what we eat and usually, we are nicely surprised. Previously, he served three piece of salmon prepared 3 different ways. Or this other time, 2 types of hamachi and 2 types of eel. More recently, lobster and conch sushi. He is also very skilled. This one time, we had a roll we had to eat immediately so it's crunchy to the bite, otherwise, the seaweed would get soggy with every passing second. Or this ripple octopus cut in a way that is not chewy.Even local Japanese sports celebrity go there for a hometown experience, it tells you how authentic the food is here.

ok. this is one of the most tranquil, atmospheric spots! And the food is wonderful but..if you want anything near a regular dinner portion& don't want to spend over $35 dollars you'll consider this a fail. The Tofu entree was most favorable ..with tamari, the best I've had.- I would suggest, they give five pieces;though instead of three. The sushi was magnificent tasted quite fresh!! My stepfather had the smoked salmon and said it was delightful- One problem however i think it was -circumstancial was that this incident the total rang up to 37+ (somehow.) This restaurant is a definite three stars.

I have been here twice now. This is my new favorite sushi restaurant, I have eaten sushi In Japan, Hawaii, L.A and Vancouver and I can honestly say this is my favorite spot. Let Hiro take care of you and get the omakase. He is very knowledgeable with sake and his food is amazing. He's also a great guy to chat with if you get the chance to sit at the bar.

Go for the omakase!! It was my first time and apparently, it's one of the cheapeast omakase menus in the city, while still maintaining high quality food.It was my first time trying eel and urchin and both were surprisingly good. The sushi chef was an older gentleman who looked like he had a lot of experience. He didn't say much, but he didn't have to because all of the dishes spoke for themselves.Fun/cool experience.

Went with family for omakase dinner and all the sushi served were overstuffed with wasabi. Also the last dish served was green peas sushi - which I have never seen or eaten before from my other omakase sushi experiences in the past.... I showed the pictures to my Japanese friends and they all confirmed that Japanese people don't serve green peas sushi and questioned why an authentic Japanese restaurant would serve that.Overprice for the quality and value delivered.

The person below me doesn't know their fish and should stick to "sushi on bloor" and other student hangouts or maybe they'd like some day-old sushi from the 1st Canadian basement. Hiro knows what he is doing. You don't need to add wasabi as he puts it in the sushi for you - Chrissie B. Anyway, service can sometimes suck so sit at the bar whenever possible. Great fish and best salmon skin in the city. as well as marinated salmon and smoked butter fish.

If you really want to enjoy eating at Hiro get ready to spend a $100 in one fell swoop. You are paying for a personal meal service and a sort-of artistic performance. Don't be afraid to talk to him, as he serves you piece by piece you will get to know Hiro's style more. Follow his instructions, if he says eat something like this, eat it like that. If you don't like wasabi let him know before he starts, because he will season things his way, because this is his show.It seems many people don't understand what Hiro offers. In true Japanese "omakase" style this place is not where you want to go for take-out, western sushi, or any other stuff that you might be used to. You come here to understand one person's deep relationship with food.

Food is great, fish is not only fresh but also the cut and size of each portion ensures a very balanced taste for nigiris, and unless you ask for them to go easy on the wasabi, it is liberally used (which I personally like). If you go more than once, you will notice some repetition in the omakase items, but overall, this is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Toronto. I find the service polite, although it can be slow as there is only one chef. However, this also ensures consistency, which is what keeps me going back.

by far the BEST sushi in Toronto and one of the best anywhere. I travel over 160 days a year on business around the world. For the last 18 years, ever since I was introduced to this "hole in the wall" I look forward to coming to Toronto as I know I will be spending one evening at Hiro Sushi. Anyone familiar with the art of the Sushi making knows that it takes years, even decades, to perfect the craft. Hiro San has dedicated his life to learning and he is a true Sushi Master. Don't expect your regular California Rolls or to be served on a large platter. Make a reservation, come in and leave your watch behind. Ask for Omakase Menu. This is an Experience to remember and to come back to ! SUPERB, EVERY TIME! ( a customer for 18 years and counting )PLEASE NOTE: January 2019 - unfortunately Hiro Sushi restaurant closed at the end of 2018 after 30+ years. Hiro San retired.

Went back again after my first review because it is the only high end Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood. I think the competitions in Toronto is so high that this restaurant needs to upgrade their food.Old review 2 years ago:Very expensive but the food quality do not match the price.I ordered 50 dollars of sashimi to go. I got around 20 pieces of sashimi. The sashimi wasn't the nice part of the fish, thus didn't taste great.I could find better quality of sushi at other restaurants for cheaper price.

Hiro Sushi is one of the best sushi restaurants I have been to! I'm really surprised at the 3.3 rating. I had Omakase with a friend and while not cheap - you get what you pay for. I had an amazing experience (great food, great service, great ambience, especially with their new renovations). What a great way to catch up over hours with a good friend. If you are looking for a rushed serving experience (this isn't it - this is a place where you go to enjoy your food and to wait patiently for the next dish) ... I lost count with the rounds of fish that were served and left very satisfied. I will definitely be recommending this place to my foodie friends.

While the butterfish was sublime and the gravlox an interesting delight the service was offensive. At a table of four that included three PhDs, and two law degrees, we actually debated whether the service was deliberately bad or benign neglect. I do not mind paying for food of this quality but cannot countenance abysmal service especially at this price point! I was embarrassed as the host. I doubt I will return as there are tons of great places to dine. I suspect that the service was better at the sushi counter. If you insist on attending then make sure you sit at the sushi bar and not any where else in the restaurant. Hiro makes a beautiful house soy. Light and subtle. I had the audacity to request wasabi. I get that master Hiro has added it while he prepares his beautiful bites, I should not be made to feel offended or offensive because I happen to like more! Total hubris!

This is one of my long-standing, very favourite places: the sushi and sashimi is simply outstanding, and the cooked dishes inventive, delicious and satisfying. Hiro is a master with food, and it starts with ingredients, follows through with traditionally Japanese presentation and balance of flavour, and attention to detail and service. I would recommend eating omakase style (chef's choice) at the sushi bar; in many years of dining, I haven't had the same menu twice. Note that Hiro's place is quite casual--you wouldn't be uncomfortable there in jeans. But the surroundings I treasure there are not the walls or the lighting, but Hiro himself and the mix of other people. So despite the casual environment, the dining, and the company, is always really fine.

Hiro is an artist without a business partner or manager.Simply, if you want the best sushi in Toronto (and pretty much everywhere I have ever tried, and I have tried very, very hard) then you sit at the bar at Hiro, say Omikazee (I trust you), and let the master blow your mind. It's incomparable.

Chef Hiro is very thoughtful and skillful - making this experience unique. The omakase is a great experience and it focuses on the real Japanese food (the right amount of seafood to the right amount of rice - as it should be). The variety of sushis served was fantastic (easily more than 10) and he would always mention where it was from or how it was prepared. We engaged in a very good conversation and he would always ask someone to bring more tea when my cup was empty - being a fantastic host.I would definitely come back again for another pleasant dinner!

My Japanese friend took me to this place, not knowing whether it was good or not. He loved it, I loved it. That was 2 years ago. We visited this place numerous times since and I would say it's the best sushi you can get without breaking the bank. We visited Hiro this November, after it was closed for a few months for renovations. The place is so awesome now —new seating in front of the chefi, and the brick wall make this place feel very authentic. Very cozy ( read - small) but absolutely perfect. I love it and when I want quality sushi, Hiro is the first on my list. Their tempura vegetables are very nice; they don't deep fry their vegetables as one big piece, but rather they cut into thinner strips and fry it, so you are served a tangle of tempura vegetables — that was a very nice surprise — not greasy at all and so much tastier then when it's done as restaurants usually do it (one thick slice of a sweet potato deep fried).

This is not just going for sushi, it's a personally crafted sushi experience. You start off by getting to choose your saki glass, then you are left to enjoy yourself while the appetizers are prepared. The appetizers were like nothing I've ever had before! That was the best part of this restaurant. I've attached pictures ... There was some sort of soup mixture in a fruit - but the fruit went great. It was like the $20 version of Tim Horton's chili in a bread bowl! The chef is a master sushi chef who brews his own soy sauce and makes his own ginger... I've never eaten freshly brewed soy sauce before. It was perfectly balanced with soy and sauce. The wasabi is perfectly layered into the freshly made sushi exhibition and brought to you with a personal touch. The soup is delicious, sushi is amazing and the ambiance is great. This is expensive, but worth the experience if you've ever wanted to try sushi from aastwr chef.
